Making metabolic health a priority

One of the greatest medical challenges of our time is the rapid rise of obesity and related metabolic diseases. These conditions touch nearly every system in the body and nearly every family across our 38-county South Texas service area. But at The University of Texas at San Antonio’s Health Science Center, and through our health system, UT Health San Antonio, we’re changing the trajectory.

Collaborative teams across the institution are putting together the pieces of this complex puzzle. Our scientists and clinicians — along with our patients — are on the leading edge of discovery and care, developing new ways to treat and prevent these diseases. We are exploring how early interventions can change the course of a child’s health, how metabolism can be reprogrammed and how precision medicine can halt metabolic disease in its tracks so that patients can live longer, healthier lives.

UT San Antonio has a bold vision for the future of metabolic health that is reflected in our mission. We strive every day to make lives better for the people of Texas and beyond by bringing the power of science to the bedside, to the community and to the next generation of scientists and physicians.

The future of metabolic research is likewise being shaped right here in San Antonio at UT Health San Antonio. From our labs to our clinics, our teams are turning research into real solutions. And the impact of our work is growing.

This issue of Future magazine highlights a few of these advances. It also marks a turning point as the first issue since our historic merger with The University of Texas at San Antonio, which unites our medical, engineering and computer science expertise. As we enter this new chapter of our joint university’s history, we will expand our reach, accelerate discovery and use these breakthrough therapies to address the health needs of Texans and all Americans.
