Record-Breaking Matching Class Graduates

On May 20, the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine conferred Doctor of Medicine degrees to 206 graduates. Very proud and enthusiastic family members and friends attended the commencement ceremony at the UTSA Convocation Center.

The Class of 2018 broke the school’s matching record with 99 percent securing residency positions beginning July 1. Residency locations include 53 percent outside of Texas and 47 percent in Texas with 20 percent in local programs, including UT Health San Antonio, CHRISTUS Health and the San Antonio Military Medical Center. In San Antonio, 18 percent of graduates are training at UT Health.

The most popular specialties are: Internal Medicine (32 students), Emergency Medicine (22 students) Family Medicine (19 students), Pediatrics (19 students), Obstetrics and Gynecology (16 students), Psychiatry (15 students), and Anesthesiology (13 students).

Primary care careers are being pursued by 46 percent (94 students) of this class. These residencies include Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, and Internal Medicine/Pediatrics.
