Monthly Virtual Webinar Series Allows Education to Continue

Virtual Webinar

When the coronavirus pandemic hit in March 2020, the Mays Cancer Center, home to UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson, was forced to cancel its annual Living Beyond Cancer A-Z symposium for patients and caregivers.

Because of the pandemic, many patients were filled with uncertainty and wondered how this health crisis would impact their cancer treatment, doctor’s appointments, and follow-up care.

Organizers — along with key leaders, faculty and staff — quickly realized the importance of being able to connect patients, caregivers and the general public with Mays Cancer Center experts in cancer and infectious disease and answer their questions about COVID-19, general cancer screening, early detection and overall wellness.

The center began a monthly virtual webinar series for the next seven months.

The webinar series kicked off with a presentation given by Mays Cancer Center leadership with an overview of the current state of COVID-19, how the virus originated and progressed, and what measures the cancer center was taking to continue delivering treatment safely during the pandemic.

Each month’s webinar focused on a specific cancer. The webinars consisted of specific cancer experts as panelists presenting topics, including prevention, screenings, treatments, cancer survivorship, and follow-up care. Each presentation concluded with a questions and answers session.
