Newly Named Medical School Celebrates 2017 Graduates

Almost 200 medical students graduated on May 21 from the Joe R. & Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine.
This year’s class had a record number of family members participating in the hooding of their graduates. Seventy family members—including parents, siblings and spouses—enjoyed draping the hoods on their loved ones during the commencement ceremony at the UTSA Convocation Center.

A record 98.5 percent of the graduates began an internship across the U.S. on July 1. In this class, 50.5 percent are training outside of Texas, 49.5 percent are in Texas, and 21.9 percent are training in local programs, including UT Health San Antonio, CHRISTUS Health and the San Antonio Military Medical Center. In San Antonio, 19.9 percent of the graduates are training at UT Health San Antonio.

The most popular residency programs this year were Internal Medicine (30 students), Emergency Medicine (22 students), Obstetrics and Gynecology (20 students), Pediatrics (20 students), Anesthesiology (19 students), Orthopaedics (11 students), Psychiatry (11 students), Family Medicine (10 students), and Neurology (7 students).
Primary care career paths are being pursued by 43.1 percent of the class. This career choice includes Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Pediatrics.
