At 9 p.m. on a Friday, many young\u00a0professionals are unwinding, preparing to\u00a0enjoy the beginning of a weekend away\u00a0from the office. Not Kelly McGlothen. This\u00a0is when the 26-year-old nurse comes to life as she\u00a0heads expeditiously toward the Biobehavioral Research\u00a0Laboratory in the School of Nursing at The University\u00a0of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. In her\u00a0arms she cradles four small test tubes. To most, the\u00a0contents might seem unpleasant, but to McGlothen,\u00a0the saliva inside is as good as gold.\u00a0 In the lab, she loads the specimens into a centrifuge\u00a0where they spin for 15 minutes. Then she gently tucks\u00a0them into the freezer at minus 82 degrees Celsius\u00a0where they\u2019ll remain until she collects more to analyze.<\/p>\n

A registered nurse, McGlothen earned her B.S.N.\u00a0from the School of Nursing at the UT Health Science\u00a0Center San Antonio in 2012 and returned in the fall of\u00a02013 to pursue her Ph.D. As part of her coursework,\u00a0McGlothen serves as a graduate research assistant.\u00a0Under the tutelage of her mentor Lisa Cleveland,\u00a0Ph.D., RN, an assistant professor in the School of\u00a0Nursing\u2019s Department of Family and Community\u00a0Health Systems, McGlothen launched a pilot study\u00a0with the goal of helping some of San Antonio\u2019s most\u00a0vulnerable patients\u2014infants born to mothers addicted\u00a0to and recovering from opioids, including drugs such\u00a0as heroin, methadone, Vicodin and others both legal\u00a0and illegal.<\/p>\n

McGlothen, who grew up in Texas,\u00a0where teen pregnancy rates are among some\u00a0of the highest in the nation, said that as a\u00a0teen she was well aware of the problems\u00a0that young mothers can encounter when life\u00a0stresses become overwhelming.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I lived in Corpus Christi, I had\u00a0some friends who became pregnant very early\u00a0on and weren\u2019t ready for the responsibilities\u00a0of motherhood,\u201d McGlothen said. \u201cOne\u00a0was 15 and the other was only 12 years old.\u00a0I could see how a troubled young woman not\u00a0equipped to handle the pressures of being a\u00a0new mom could turn to substance abuse or\u00a0other unhealthy habits as an escape.\u201d\u00a0 McGlothen recalls serving as a support\u00a0system for her expectant friends by going\u00a0along with them to their clinic visits. She\u2019d\u00a0wait patiently, offer encouragement, and lend\u00a0a sympathetic ear and shoulder. It was then\u00a0that she decided she wanted to be a nurse.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted a career that would allow me to\u00a0help others, especially those who don\u2019t have\u00a0the resources or support to help themselves,\u201d\u00a0she said. \u201cNursing offers all of this plus the\u00a0opportunity to delve into research, which is\u00a0something I was very interested in doing.\u201d\u00a0 McGlothen said she is pursuing her\u00a0dream, thanks to the dedicated faculty of\u00a0the School of Nursing. Her faculty mentor,\u00a0Dr. Cleveland, who has more than 20 years\u00a0of experience as a neonatal nurse, established\u00a0in 2013 a partnership among the School of\u00a0Nursing, University Hospital, the Center for\u00a0Health Care Services and the Department\u00a0of State Health Services. The purpose is to\u00a0disseminate a San Antonio treatment and\u00a0counseling effort called \u201cThe Mommies Program\u201d for substance-abuse\u00a0recovering mothers and their newborns. Since then, more\u00a0than 1,000 women have benefited from the program. McGlothen\u00a0considers herself among the beneficiaries as she was able to engage\u00a0in the program as Dr. Cleveland\u2019s research assistant.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m doing what I love: helping young women, their babies and\u00a0contributing to important research,\u201d McGlothen said.<\/p>\n

Kelly McGlothen, RN, who earned her B.S.N. from the School of Nursing in 2012, is now enrolled in the Ph.D. program. While teaching students on campus, McGlothen takes time to encourage undergraduates to enroll in the B.S.N. to Ph.D. in Nursing Program. “We need more qualified nurse researchers who will be the next great scientists and teachers,” McGlothen said.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

She doesn\u2019t mind being on call in the evenings or on weekends.\u00a0When she gets a call, she hurries to the Neonatal Intensive Care\u00a0Unit at University Hospital where the program\u2019s participants are\u00a0practicing Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC), a method of skin-to-skin\u00a0mother-infant cradling. She gingerly collects samples of saliva\u00a0from both mom and baby and transports the specimens to the lab\u00a0in the School of Nursing. There, she and her research team measure\u00a0cortisol (a biomarker of stress) levels in recovering mothers and\u00a0their babies before and during KMC to discover if this technique\u00a0reduces stress and improves attachment.
\nMcGlothen is adding to Dr. Cleveland\u2019s research and hopes\u00a0to help her learn more about whether KMC decreases the infants\u2019\u00a0need for medication and reduces their hospital stays and cost.<\/p>\n

Dr. Cleveland was awarded a two-year, $264,000 grant from\u00a0the Department of State Health Services to expand her study to\u00a0other hospitals throughout the state. McGlothen in the meantime\u00a0has added another feather to her cap\u2014teacher. She recently began\u00a0lecturing students in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program\u00a0to encourage undergraduates to enroll in the B.S.N. to Ph.D. in\u00a0Nursing program, a pipeline program to recruit more nurses into\u00a0research. McGlothen, who is herself a product of the B.S.N. to\u00a0Ph.D. program, said she considers encouraging nurses to pursue\u00a0research to be a privilege.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe greatest gift students can have is faculty like Dr. Cleveland\u00a0who take them under their wing and help them develop their\u00a0passion and grow into their own,\u201d McGlothen said. \u201cIt happened\u00a0for me. I hope I can do the same for others.\u201d<\/p>\n
