Nurses team with CPS Energy to keep community healthy<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

What do CPS Energy, the nation’s\u00a0largest municipally owned\u00a0energy company, and the\u00a0UT Health Science Center San Antonio\u00a0School of Nursing have in common? More\u00a0than you may know.\u00a0 The two joined forces in the summer\u00a0of 2015 to better educate the community\u00a0on issues related to health and safety.\u00a0Jesse Hernandez, director of Community\u00a0Programs for CPS Energy, said their\u00a0business is more than just a utility company.\u00a0 \u201cWe serve more than 786,000 electric\u00a0customers and 339,000 natural gas\u00a0customers in the greater San Antonio\u00a0area,\u201d Hernandez said. \u201cWe care about\u00a0the customers we serve and want to be\u00a0a trusted resource for their home energy\u00a0health and safety issues. We realized the\u00a0School of Nursing would be the ideal\u00a0partner for us in this aim.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hernandez\u2019s team collaborated with\u00a0School of Nursing faculty to increase\u00a0awareness of\u00a0the customer\u00a0assistance and\u00a0discount programs\u00a0CPS Energy offers.\u00a0The goal is to\u00a0improve citizens\u2019\u00a0health and safety\u00a0outcomes.\u00a0 Nursing\u00a0professors Adelita\u00a0Cantu, Ph.D.,\u00a0RN, and Karine\u00a0Crow, Ph.D., RN,\u00a0immediately saw\u00a0the connection.\u00a0 \u201cNursing\u00a0students are on\u00a0the forefront of\u00a0interfacing with\u00a0and establishing\u00a0trust with the\u00a0community,\u201d\u00a0Dr. Cantu said. \u201cPopulation health relates\u00a0to the whole of what makes a community\u00a0healthy and the environment impacts\u00a0health in a multitude of ways. CPS Energy\u00a0is working to create an environment that\u00a0keeps people healthy. Our faculty and\u00a0students have the skills and knowledge to\u00a0help make that happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

As part of the partnership, nursing\u00a0students visit San Antonio neighborhoods\u00a0to participate in public speaking\u00a0opportunities and to conduct one-on-one\u00a0conversations and interviews with\u00a0community members. They inform citizens\u00a0about myriad community assistance\u00a0programs CPS Energy offers those in need.\u00a0Students focus on vulnerable populations\u00a0including residents at senior centers and\u00a0those living in low-income housing areas.\u00a0They conduct community assessments and\u00a0help identify homeowners who may need\u00a0help with energy efficiency problems or\u00a0assistance with their energy bills.\u00a0 Darinka Hudson, RN, who is a student in\u00a0the M.S.N. program in the School of Nursing,\u00a0said participating in the partnership gave\u00a0her confidence to help bridge gaps between\u00a0the public and CPS Energy.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen students joined the effort,\u00a0people seemed more open to recognizing\u00a0the benefits CPS Energy programs offered\u00a0them,\u201d Hudson said.\u00a0 Dr. Cantu indicated the goal is for\u00a0nursing students to deliver the message\u00a0to qualified community members and\u00a0encourage them to apply for CPS Energy\u00a0services. The initial engagement improves\u00a0the opportunity for CPS Energy staff to\u00a0communicate with and help those who\u00a0qualify for their programs.\u00a0 Dr. Crow added that the program\u00a0allows nursing students to experience\u00a0firsthand what it takes to meet public\u00a0health needs.\u00a0 \u201cPoor housing quality for example\u00a0can lead to a homeowner\u2019s inability to\u00a0maintain his home\u2019s temperature control,\u00a0which could render him susceptible to\u00a0illness when climate changes. That in turn\u00a0can lead to ailments and absenteeism and\u00a0a decrease in productivity in our city\u2019s\u00a0workforce,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a vicious cycle.\u201d<\/p>\n

The partnership helps demonstrate\u00a0to students the various potential energyrelated\u00a0home health hazards that might\u00a0bring people into a hospital.\u00a0 \u201cIt also helps students realize how\u00a0public health nurses have an impact\u00a0on patients\u2019 health even if they aren\u2019t\u00a0administering medication or tending to\u00a0more common ailments. It makes the\u00a0connection more real.\u201d<\/p>\n

Students and faculty are continually\u00a0working with CPS Energy to improve the\u00a0new partnership. In one instance, students\u00a0found community members complained\u00a0that assistance applications were too\u00a0complicated, wordy and difficult to read.\u00a0When they alerted CPS Energy staff, the\u00a0Community Programs team quickly made\u00a0changes to improve the forms.\u00a0 \u201cThe goal is for the School of Nursing\u00a0to be the conduit to increasing awareness\u00a0about our community programs, and they\u00a0have,\u201d Hernandez said.\u00a0 \u201cOur preliminary data indicates that\u00a0students have helped identify more than\u00a0200 homes as qualifying for programs we\u00a0offer to help citizens improve their homes\u2019\u00a0energy efficiency. We tailored promotional\u00a0pieces and created an online application\u00a0that helped increase the number of\u00a0applicants to the programs,\u201d he said.\u00a0 Dr. Crow said the experience broadens\u00a0students\u2019 awareness of resources available\u00a0in the community.\u00a0 \u201cThey gain a wider perspective,\u201d she\u00a0said. \u201cThis effort is a perfect example\u00a0of an academic and health partnership\u00a0that allows us all to think more creatively\u00a0about ways we can work together to\u00a0enhance the health of our community.\u201d<\/p>\n
