Chavez, D.N.P., RN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em><strong>NIH selects nurses to train at acclaimed genetics institute<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nEveryone will fall risk to some sort of\u00a0health condition or disease at some\u00a0point in their lifetime. Whether\u00a0it is high blood pressure, diabetes, heart\u00a0disease or Alzheimer\u2019s, if your mom, dad,\u00a0grandparent or another relative had it,\u00a0the chances are higher that you might\u00a0someday receive the same diagnosis. That\u2019s\u00a0because genetics, or heredity, play a role in\u00a0determining your disease destiny.<\/p>\n<p>Nurses are at the frontline of detecting\u00a0many of the disease risk factors patients\u00a0present during their regular doctor visits\u00a0because nurses are normally the first health\u00a0care workers the patient sees at the clinic.\u00a0They discuss with the patient his family\u00a0history, current symptoms and lifestyle\u00a0factors that may contribute to his well-being.\u00a0 Among patients\u2019 most trusted health\u00a0care workers, nurses possess the skills\u00a0and knowledge to help patients prevent\u00a0many of the hereditary diseases for which\u00a0they may succumb. Yet, not all nurses are\u00a0trained to apply genetic evaluation when\u00a0meeting with patients.\u00a0 Two faculty members from the School of\u00a0Nursing, Bertha E. \u201cPenny\u201d Flores, Ph.D.,\u00a0RN, and John B. Chavez, D.N.P., RN,\u00a0FNP-BC, are leading efforts to integrate\u00a0genetics training into the School of Nursing\u00a0curriculum so graduates are well versed in\u00a0the fundamentals.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Flores is an assistant professor\u00a0whose research focuses on women\u2019s health,\u00a0cultural competency, health literacy and\u00a0health issues of the elderly. Dr. Chavez is an\u00a0assistant clinical professor who specializes\u00a0in preventing reversible diseases such as\u00a0heart attacks, stroke, diabetes and obesity\u00a0in patients. He focuses on applying genetics\u00a0and genomics and advanced diagnostic and\u00a0blood testing as well as incorporating diet\u00a0and exercise into patients\u2019 treatment plans.<\/p>\n<p>The two were selected to attend the\u00a0National Institute of Nursing Research\u00a0Summer Genetics Institute sponsored by\u00a0the National Institutes of Health (NIH)\u00a0and held this past summer on the campus\u00a0of the NIH in Bethesda.\u00a0 They were nominated by School of\u00a0Nursing Dean Eileen Breslin, Ph.D., RN,\u00a0FAAN, and among 25 nurse researchers\u00a0from prestigious institutions across the\u00a0country hand selected by the NIH. There\u00a0they attended lectures presented by some\u00a0of the world\u2019s leading geneticists and\u00a0took part in hands-on molecular genetic\u00a0laboratory techniques.\u00a0 \u201cThis was the first time I was in a genetics\u00a0lab. I was fascinated,\u201d Dr. Flores said.<\/p>\n<p>In labs Drs. Flores and Chavez practiced\u00a0techniques in micro and serological pipetting\u00a0and culturing and learned how to isolate\u00a0cells. They also studied related terminology\u00a0and examined national policies and laws\u00a0impacting genetic research and testing.\u00a0 Dr. Chavez said he was impressed by\u00a0the rate at which the field of genetics has\u00a0progressed.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s amazing how far the technology\u00a0and data have come over the years,\u201d he\u00a0said. \u201cAdvances are allowing health care\u00a0providers to better tailor care for their\u00a0patients. It is important for nurses to be\u00a0involved and up-to-date,\u201d Dr. Chavez said.\u00a0\u201cWhen nurses are in the know, they can\u00a0help explain lab results to their patients and\u00a0make recommendations because they can\u00a0understand the process behind the tests.\u201d\u00a0 Both Drs. Flores and Chavez said they\u00a0are grateful to the dean and their colleagues\u00a0for supporting their participation and\u00a0recommend more nursing faculty attend\u00a0future institutes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn some cases, hereditary factors of some\u00a0diseases can be slowed or prevented with the\u00a0right intervention,\u201d Dr. Flores said. \u201cNurses\u00a0are essential in disease prevention and patient\u00a0care so comprehensive training, including in\u00a0genetics, is important to personalizing care.\u00a0This is key to our patients\u2019 health now and in\u00a0the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Article by Natalie A.
