{"id":3685,"date":"2025-07-29T13:00:07","date_gmt":"2025-07-29T13:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/schools\/?p=3685"},"modified":"2026-02-11T17:06:28","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T17:06:28","slug":"mentors-missions-and-the-making-of-a-nurse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/schools\/2025\/07\/29\/mentors-missions-and-the-making-of-a-nurse\/","title":{"rendered":"Mentors, missions and the making of a nurse"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Guided by experienced preceptors, School of Nursing students gain hands-on training through a unique nurse-led care model serving the San Antonio community<\/h2>\n<p>by Orith Farago<\/p>\n<p>Students at <a href=\"https:\/\/uthscsa.edu\/nursing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UT Health San Antonio\u2019s School of Nursing<\/a> are receiving critical hands-on training in outpatient care by participating in clinical rotations via <a href=\"https:\/\/wellness360.uthealthsa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wellness 360<\/a>, the school\u2019s ambulatory clinical practice. The practice\u2019s 14 clinical sites, which include four adult, seven pediatric and three behavioral health clinics throughout San Antonio, are all based on a progressive practitioner-run model.<\/p>\n<p>As part their hands-on experience in the clinical setting, students work with preceptors, or mentors, who provide the perfect blend of expertise and guidance in a variety of specialties \u2014 from pediatrics and family care to psychiatric mental health and adult gerontology acute care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt UT Health San Antonio, many of the nurse practitioners also teach, so they\u2019re excellent teachers,\u201d said Alina Lundblade, BSN, RN, a student pursuing her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree, or DNP, to become a family nurse practitioner. Family nurse practitioners specialize in preventive and primary care services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re really eager to work with us. You may be doing something with one and the other one may walk in and say, \u2018Hey, there\u2019s a really interesting patient, or I\u2019m going somewhere interesting tomorrow. Do you want to come with me?\u2019 So, you get really unique opportunities to learn and see things differently. It opens up your perspective, so down the road, when you\u2019re faced with things, you\u2019re better prepared,\u201d said Lundblade.<\/p>\n<p>These real-world clinical rotations are also beneficial for the students\u2019 mentors, said <a href=\"https:\/\/wellness360.uthealthsa.org\/meet-our-team\/brittany-lents-cpnp-pc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brittany Lents, MSN, APRN, CPNP-PC<\/a>, a nursing clinical assistant professor. Lents served as Lundblade\u2019s mentor at the pediatric Wellness 360 clinic, located at the School of Nursing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe [mentoring] is really helpful for us on the clinic side because our students [enable us] to reach more patients,\u201d Lents said. \u201cOur students, a lot of times, have great past experiences that they bring as a benefit into the clinical experience. So, I always learn from students, and I love that aspect of being a preceptor.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3687\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3687\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3687 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/schools\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/07\/mentors-ken-miller.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Ken miller talks with someone in a recovery room.\" width=\"800\" height=\"463\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/schools\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/07\/mentors-ken-miller.jpg 800w, https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/schools\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/07\/mentors-ken-miller-450x260.jpg 450w, https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/schools\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/07\/mentors-ken-miller-768x444.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3687\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In fiscal year 2024, Wellness 360 provided 32,460 patient visits across its clinical services, including behavioral health, the Green Wellness Program and the Pediatrics North Hub.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Providing needed services<\/h3>\n<p>Thanks to partnerships with the Housing First Community Coalition \u2014 a nonprofit organization that seeks to develop housing for San Antonians \u2014 and Health Resources and Services Administration grants, nursing students can see firsthand how the Wellness 360 nursing model helps those in need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur clinics mostly serve [the] uninsured, underinsured population,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.uthscsa.edu\/academics\/profile\/saldivam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maria Saldiva, DNP, APRN, FNP-C<\/a>, assistant clinical professor at the School of Nursing. Lundblade is currently doing a clinical rotation at a Wellness 360 clinic where Saldiva is the primary nurse practitioner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the patients do not have insurance for Wellness 360 services, their services are covered through grants and other funding. That\u2019s really important for the students to see that we can access funds and grants to be to be able to serve the community in Bexar County and beyond,\u201d Saldiva said.<\/p>\n<p>Nursing students enrolled in a postgraduate program \u2014 whether pursuing a doctorate or postgraduate certificate \u2014 are required to be licensed nurses to participate in these graduate-level programs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3688\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3688\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3688\" src=\"https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/schools\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/07\/mentors-team.jpg\" alt=\"Four members stand in front a window and pull-up banners.\" width=\"400\" height=\"233\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3688\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Left to right:<\/strong> Candace Martinez, medical assistant; Anita Rincon, medical assistant; Maria Saldiva, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, assistant clinical professor; and Roy Aguilar, medical assistant, serve patients and manage students who rotate through the School of Nursing\u2019s Wellness 360 clinic located at San Antonio College.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMany of our [graduate] students have been nurses who have been working in the hospitals around here for a long period of time, and they\u2019re still working in those hospitals,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.uthscsa.edu\/academics\/profile\/millerkp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kenneth Miller, PhD, MJ, RN, CFNP, FAAN, FAANP<\/a>, associate dean for ambulatory services at the School of Nursing. \u201cWhen they finish their degree, most of them go back to the same hospitals they were working at and become primary care providers there, or they\u2019ll go out into the San Antonio area and work in clinics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students pursuing their Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees also rotate through the School of Nursing\u2019s ambulatory practices, particularly the pediatric practice, said <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.uthscsa.edu\/academics\/profile\/worabo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heidi Worabo, APRN, FNP-BC, FAANP<\/a>, associate professor, clinical.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #7e67a3;\">\u201cMany of our [graduate] students have been nurses who have been working in the hospitals around here for a long period of time, and they\u2019re still working in those hospitals.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #7e67a3;\">\u2014 Kenneth Miller, PhD, MJ, RN, CFNP, FAAN, FAANP<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Building experience for the future<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3689\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3689\" style=\"width: 276px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3689 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/schools\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/07\/mentors-ken-miller2.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Ken Miller stands in a hallway.\" width=\"276\" height=\"458\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/schools\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/07\/mentors-ken-miller2.jpg 276w, https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/schools\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/07\/mentors-ken-miller2-181x300.jpg 181w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 276px) 100vw, 276px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3689\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kenneth Miller, PhD, MJ, RN, CFNP, FAAN, FAANP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Despite her experience as a registered nurse in pediatric oncology at Methodist Children\u2019s Hospital, Lundblade still had butterflies when she started her clinical rotations through the university\u2019s ambulatory practices, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt took me a few days, and then I realized how equipped I already was, and how I already knew how to talk to patients and to recognize things that I didn\u2019t realize I already knew how to do as a registered nurse,\u201d Lundblade said.<\/p>\n<p>During Lundblade\u2019s pediatric clinical rotation with Lents, she, like other students training in the clinical setting, experienced firsthand the role of a provider by reviewing patient charts, conducting wellness exams, making diagnoses, determining treatment plans and completing patient charts \u2014 all under a learning environment guided by a trusted mentor.
