Glenn R. Walters, DDS, associate professor of endodontics, trained every dental student in the School of Dentistry from 1971 through May 1, 2020. Dr. Walters packed away his endodontic ruler and retired from UT Health San Antonio after 49 years of service.

Graduates Share Experiences 50 Years Apart

First dental and dental hygiene graduates explain challenges and benefits of being in historic classes. The 2020 graduates describe their unique experience of finishing their studies and graduating during a global pandemic.



Robin Lopez, sterilization supervisor, screens each mask before putting it in the custom Bio Cabinet designed by the dental school team and built by UT Health San Antonio’s Facilities Management. The central sterilization unit uses vapor hydrogen peroxide to decontaminate and sterilize the face masks and respirators so they can be used again.

School Adapts Immediately to COVID-19 Pandemic

As the world shut down because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the School of Dentistry’s academic leadership team figured out how to offer virtual classes and exams while the clinical team implemented new PPE and safety procedures.
