RYUSHIRO SUGITA, DDS, MS, and MICHAEL P. VIETH, DDS, MS, both Class of 2021, were named finalists in the 2021 Balint Orban Memorial Program by the American Academy of Periodontology. As it is more commonly known, the Orban competition has been a prestigious event at the annual meetings since 1960. It provides an opportunity for current and recent periodontal residents to present clinical and basic science research.

Dr. Sugita has been selected as a finalist in the basic science category for his research project titled, “Evaluation of a Novel Bone Adhesive for Maintenance of Crestal Bone Around Implants in Canine Oversized Osteotomies.” As a clinical research finalist, Dr. Vieth will present his research project titled, “The Effect of Intravenous Dexamethasone on Post-operative Pain Following Periodontal Flap Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Investigation of Short-Term Patient Response.”

This year, the Academy accepted over 180 abstract submissions competing for only eight finalist positions: four for basic science research and four for clinical research.

The selection of Dr. Sugita and Dr. Vieth marks the second year in a row that the School of Dentistry has a finalist in each category. In 2020, Arwa M. Al Hugail, BDS, MS, and Akemi K. Arzouman, DMD, MS, both Class of 2020, also competed.
