{"id":11849,"date":"2024-11-11T11:20:23","date_gmt":"2024-11-11T11:20:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/mission\/?p=11849"},"modified":"2026-02-04T16:31:58","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T16:31:58","slug":"healing-hounds-clinics-canine-greeters-help-relieve-pre-therapy-patient-anxiety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/mission\/healing-hounds-clinics-canine-greeters-help-relieve-pre-therapy-patient-anxiety\/","title":{"rendered":"Healing hounds: Clinic\u2019s canine greeters help relieve pre-therapy patient anxiety"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With a wag of their tails, dogs \u2014 and other furry creatures \u2014 can help humans relieve the anxiety associated with therapy and other medical appointments<\/span><\/em><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On a typical visit to the <a href=\"https:\/\/uthscsa.edu\/physicians\/services\/ut-health-physicians-psychiatry-behavioral-health-now-program\">New Opportunities for Wellness (NOW)<\/a> behavioral health clinic, you might be greeted in the lobby by the likes of Lady AnnaBella, a Shih Tzu, and her owner, Sandra Olsaver.<\/p>\n<p>The mission of the dozens of teams of volunteers from <a href=\"https:\/\/pawsforservice.org\/\">PAWS (<em>pets are wonderful support<\/em>) for Service<\/a> and from <a href=\"https:\/\/therapyanimalssa.org\/\">Therapy Animals of San Antonio<\/a> that routinely visit the clinic is to help alleviate the anxiety patients may have while waiting for their therapy appointments.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11942\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11942\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11942\" src=\"https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/Lady-AnnaBella-300x248.jpg\" alt=\"therapy dog with her owner\" width=\"290\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/Lady-AnnaBella-300x248.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/Lady-AnnaBella-1024x845.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/Lady-AnnaBella-150x124.jpg 150w, https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/Lady-AnnaBella-768x634.jpg 768w, https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/Lady-AnnaBella-1536x1268.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/Lady-AnnaBella-2048x1690.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/Lady-AnnaBella-350x289.jpg 350w, https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/Lady-AnnaBella.jpg 2268w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 290px) 100vw, 290px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11942\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Therapy Animals of San Antonio volunteer Sandra Olsaver and her Shih Tzu teammate, Lady AnnaBella, happily greet and mingle with NOW clinic patients.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Another benefit of Healing Hounds \u2014 the official name of the program \u2014 is that the mere presence of these four-legged ambassadors can create a more productive therapy session by helping patients relax, according to clinic director <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.uthscsa.edu\/academics\/profile\/fredrick\">Megan Fredrick, MA, LPC-S<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The NOW clinic, funded by University Health through the Southwest Texas Regional Advisory Council, is a collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/uthscsa.edu\/\">The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio<\/a> and is open to any adult Bexar County resident in need of behavioral health treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Healing Hounds is the brainchild of <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.uthscsa.edu\/academics\/profile\/stensland\">Meredith Stensland, PhD, LMSW<\/a>, a health science center assistant professor of research in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. The program is an offshoot of <a href=\"https:\/\/news.uthscsa.edu\/research-study-investigates-impact-of-therapy-dogs-for-dialysis-patients\/\">Dialysis Doggos<\/a>, a research study conducted by Stensland in which dogs were used to encourage dialysis patients to attend grueling appointments and help improve symptoms of pain and depression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe study tested the therapeutic value of having therapy dogs visit an outpatient clinic,\u201d Stensland said. \u201cI got with Megan and thought, \u2018Why can\u2019t we try and implement it here at our outpatient psychiatry clinic?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Fredrick, incorporating the Healing Hounds program at the NOW clinic just made sense.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-12031 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/paw.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"95\" height=\"99\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/paw.jpg 246w, https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/paw-145x150.jpg 145w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 95px) 100vw, 95px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe started during the pandemic in 2020 to get people rapid access to behavioral health care \u2014 the care they need, when they need it,\u201d said Fredrick. The global pandemic and its resulting \u00a0isolation amplified the internal struggles and the self-doubt and self-judgment many people were experiencing, she added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it comes to behavioral health, there is a lot of stigma, still,\u201d said Stensland. \u201cHaving a smiling, friendly presence in the waiting room can make a really big difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Cats and bunnies, too<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Linda Porter-Wenzlaff, PhD, LPC-S, NCC, MSN, RN, a former health science center faculty member and now a director for Therapy Animals of San Antonio, said their volunteers go wherever invited and visit schools, libraries, hospitals, nursing homes and rehabilitation clinics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a rehab center, a patient can walk a dog on a leash with their owner and the patient may pay more attention to the dog and walk further without a sense of discomfort or pain because the patient is engaging with the dog,\u201d said Porter-Wenzlaff.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s been told by nursing home residents that their only physical contact is for medical purposes such as a blood pressure check or medication administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut when the animal comes in, they hop in the bed with the resident and snuggle,\u201d she said. \u201cThey tell me, \u2018It\u2019s the only time I have that wonderful positive touch.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said the animal teams are comprised of not only dogs, but also rabbits and cats. Any domestic animal is eligible to participate in the program, and no one breed is more suited as a therapy animal over another. However, every animal and their owner go through a rigorous screening process every two years to ensure ongoing suitability, Porter-Wenzlaff said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe made a decision very early we were going to follow national standards and best practices,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a matter of safety and ethics for all involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Fit for duty<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Training animals in obedience is the responsibility of the owner, as is maintaining regular veterinary checks and grooming. When owners believe their animal is ready, they go through the evaluation. Part of that involves testing a dog\u2019s basic obedience skills and ability to remain calm while being bumped and having its tail pulled. They likewise are observed while the organization\u2019s staff make noise and use equipment typically encountered in the clinic, nursing home or school setting. The relationship between the dog and owner is also evaluated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe animal has to look to the owner for direction and support. The owner has to know their animal well enough to anticipate what they need,\u201d said Porter-Wenzlaff.<\/p>\n<p>When the dog and owner are certified, they are encouraged to visit facilities near their home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt works best if they go with a population they want to be with,\u201d Porter-Wenzlaff said. \u201cWe have more requests than we can fill, so we have a long list of places and facilities to choose from.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Mood booster<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Porter-Wenzlaff\u2019s experience as a therapy dog owner is nothing new to the retired nurse. While working as a\u00a0young nurse in the 1970s with pediatric cancer patients, she noticed the children missed their animals despite visits from their families. Adult stressors may include the economy, family situations, grief and loss, as well as serious mental health conditions. Adolescents face similar stressors with the added burden of fitting into their social groups and the impact of social media or school pressures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pressure of society is harsher on kids than it used to be,\u201d noted Fredrick. While in general, psychiatry may have historically experienced longer wait times, the NOW clinic \u2014 and the new NOW for Adolescents clinic \u2014 will find availability for patients within the week, said Fredrick.<\/p>\n<p>With the additional services in one location, the Healing Hounds program has likewise expanded to include visits to all patients in the center. Between January 2023 and August 2024, hounds \u00a0and their handlers completed more than 2,700 visits with patients or their family members.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #456485;\"><strong>How hounds help<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Ample research points to the ways that animals help us, including stress reduction, social support, and even changes in hormones that regulate mood and pain, said<a href=\"https:\/\/directory.uthscsa.edu\/academics\/profile\/stensland\"> Meredith Stensland, PhD, LMSW<\/a>, a UT Health San Antonio assistant professor of research in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-12031 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/paw.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"99\" height=\"103\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/paw.jpg 246w, https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2024\/11\/paw-145x150.jpg 145w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 99px) 100vw, 99px\" \/>Animal therapy is not a new idea. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therapydogs.com\/animal-therapy\/\">Alliance for Therapy Dogs<\/a>, the ancient Greeks used horses to lift the mood of sick patients. In the 1940s, sick and injured veterans took care of farm animals to ease war-related trauma. Perhaps the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therapydogs.com\/animal-assisted-therapy\/\">formal use of animals as part of therapy<\/a> began in the 1960s when Boris Levinson, PhD, a New York City clinical psychologist, discovered that his sessions with children were significantly more productive when his dog, Jingles, was present.
