So far, the Class of 1980 leads the class-giving competition with seven gifts, followed by the classes of 1973 and 1983 with four gifts each. The Class of 2006 purchased a pool table (pictured above) for the student lounge, and the Class of 2010 made a gift to pay for recreational equipment, including a pingpong table (pictured above).

From a brand-new student lounge to expanded opportunities to put classroom knowledge to work in the community, School of Medicine students are benefiting greatly from the generosity of alumni.

The School of Medicine Alumni Association recently completed the first year of a five-year, $1.2 million fundraising goal to enhance the educational experience of students. Sixty-four alumni and friends of the school pledged $186,000 to the Student Education Enhancement Fund as of July 28.

The money will go toward:

  • New summer research projects, community service programs and medical outreach trips that allow students to take what they learn in the classroom and apply it in laboratories, as well as in communities in San Antonio and throughout the world.
  • Academic programs and capital projects that directly impact students’ education, such as expanded tutoring services and enhancements to the H-E-B Clinical Skills Center.
  • A 1,500-square-foot student lounge for club meetings, group study, relaxation, recreation and student-alumni receptions. The Alumni Association Student Lounge opened to students in July, with an alumni celebration scheduled for the fall.
