Endowment honors Mundy

The world lost an exceptional scientist, educator and friend with the passing of Gregory R. Mundy, M.D., on Feb. 25, 2010.

In honor of the passions for which Dr. Mundy is best remembered by his family and Health Science Center colleagues, William L. Henrich, M.D., MACP, UT Health Science Center president, announced the establishment of the Gregory R. Mundy, M.D., Memorial Endowed Research Fund. The fund will provide seed money to advance research of promising young biomedical and clinical scientists.

Dr. Mundy was a Health Science Center faculty member from 1980 to 2006 where he served in numerous roles including professor of Medicine and Cellular and Structural Biology, assistant dean for clinical research and principal investigator of the Frederic C. Bartter General Clinical Research Center. He trained more than 150 post-doctoral fellows in bone and mineral metabolism, many of whom have gone on to successful and prominent careers in academia and industry.

Dr. Mundy had numerous research breakthroughs involving drugs to slow bone loss and promote bone growth in patients with osteoporosis, and was the first in the nation to receive a coveted MERIT Award in the field of bone and mineral metabolism from the National Institutes of Health. He received numerous awards and honors and founded two biotechnology companies for drug discovery.
