DNA damage occurs with aging and environmental insults.<\/p>\n<p>In a new study, published in <i>Nature Communications<\/i>, Cancer Therapy &amp; Research Center researchers found that BRCA1 also serves as a limiter or governor on a gene called COBRA1 that regulates breast cell growth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe now have solid and compelling evidence that BRCA1 in breast tissue is doing something independent of DNA repair,\u201d said study lead author Rong Li, Ph.D., professor of molecular medicine. \u201cWe still think DNA repair is important for BRCA1 to suppress tumor development, but we just don\u2019t think it\u2019s the whole story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since DNA repair is needed in every cell of the body, scientists have puzzled over why loss of BRCA1 function predisposes women to only breast and ovarian cancers. Also, diminished BRCA1 activity doesn\u2019t affect men significantly, as it does women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom very early on, we and others in the field speculated that maybe there is a DNA repair-independent function associated with BRCA1 that can better explain this tissue and gender specificity,\u201d Dr. Li said.<\/p>\n<p>The new finding provides at least part of that answer, he said, and could one day translate into better diagnostic and treatment tools for this form of breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ultimate goal would be to slow down or even prevent breast cancer development in BRCA1 mutation carriers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BRCA1 is known to suppress cancer by repairing breaks in DNA, but a new study shows it also serves another important function.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":23,"featured_media":10264,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[206,63],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-9876","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-springsummer-2016","category-university-in-motion"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
