Four rigorous years of medical school culminated into an announcement on the stage of John T. Floore Country Store in nearby Helotes. Armed with commemorative letter openers and sealed envelopes, more than 200 medical students from UT Health San Antonio announced where they will be heading in the next step on their way to a career in medicine.
This year’s Match Day was on St. Patrick’s Day so a sea of green was found in the standing-room-only crowd of parents, grandparents, spouses, friends and children. The event was full of joyful tears, cheers and hugs.
While many happy students announced their residency in San Antonio, others were thrilled to be going back to their beloved hometown in another part of Texas or the U.S. while others were excited to venture to a new city across the country.
Robert M. Esterl, Jr., M.D., associate dean for undergraduate medical education, said the medical school is thrilled with this year’s match results. A record 98 percent of fourth-year students began internships in July 2017.
