The sculpture is a towering and inspirational symbol of the dedication and mission of the Mays Cancer Center to decrease the burden of cancer in San Antonio, South Texas and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>This impressive work of art \u2014 which was designed and created by world-renowned wildlife artist and sculptor, Kent Ullberg \u2014 was donated by The Jack and Valerie Guenther Foundation to offer a visual representation of hope and healing for patients and families as they enter the cancer center.<\/p>\n<p>Jack Guenther said the idea for the sculpture came to him and his wife, Valerie, several years earlier during a discussion with the former director of the cancer center. Jack stated, \u201cWe thought an institution of this magnitude should have a publicly viewable sculpture representing its mission that would serve as an inspiration to our patients, families, and health care professionals.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2062\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2062\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2062\" src=\"https:\/\/magazines.uthscsa.edu\/cancer-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/07\/Wings_Hope_Mesa_Ullberg_300_286.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"286\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2062\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Ruben Mesa, executive director of the Mays Cancer Center, with Kent Ullberg, world-renowned artist and sculptor of \u201cWings of Hope \u2013 Hands of Healing.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The artist, Kent Ullberg said, \u201cWe wanted to honor all cancer patients and the medical profession with the five-foot \u2018Healing Hands\u2019 in bronze, out of which emerges the 15-foot sparkling \u2018Wings of Hope\u2019 in polished stainless steel that forms a \u2018V\u2019 for victory over cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ruben Mesa, executive director of the Mays Cancer Center, shared, \u201cOur patients love the beauty, serenity and symbolism of this masterpiece. We often witness patients and their loved ones taking photos in front of the sculpture. The artwork is a true inspiration of the hope and healing that it represents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jack and Valerie Guenther have been longstanding key supporters and major gift donors of the cancer center since it was founded in 1974.
